Proximity Sensing Device for Visually Impaired Students
Project type
Robotics
Date
Jul 2022
Location
Delhi, India
As the president of our society, I had the privilege of leading a team of six in a meaningful and cost-effective project aimed at assisting visually impaired students in our college. Our goal was to develop an advanced proximity sensing attachment for walking sticks, a device that was not only functional but also more affordable than the existing products in the market. The average market price for such walking sticks in India is around $18 (INR 1500), but we successfully created our version for just $9 (INR 700), making it a viable option for students.
Our device is specifically designed to aid in navigation and safety, featuring ultrasonic sensors and magnetometers. Its core functionality allows it to detect obstacles up to two meters away, providing both auditory and haptic feedback to the user. This dual-feedback mechanism ensures that the user is promptly and effectively alerted to nearby obstacles, enhancing their ability to navigate various environments safely.
This project was not just about technical achievement; it was a testament to our team's commitment to social responsibility and inclusivity. By creating a more affordable alternative, we were able to extend this essential aid to a wider range of students, demonstrating that innovation and compassion can go hand in hand. The journey of developing this device was both challenging and rewarding, highlighting our team's ability to work collaboratively under tight budget constraints to deliver a product that makes a real difference in people's lives.
